RBC Engineering Students Complete Another "Hands-On" Project
Posted 10/11/2017 11:37AM
RBC Honors Engineering provides students an introduction to the concepts of modern engineering including modeling, analysis, synthesis, and design. They work in teams to design, build, and test solutions to various engineering  challenges.

Last week the students completed a design challenge to develop a prosthetic hand out of a limited amount of cardboard, string, tape, and straws.  First they brainstormed, researched, and produced a rough sketch that included the top, front, and side view with measurements. The student-designed prosthetic hands were required to have joints and a mechanism to make the fingers move, and be able to pick up an object.

Groups presented their designs to the class and tested the prototypes by determining how many ping pong balls and tennis balls the hands could grab and place in 30 seconds.  The class then discussed any improvements to consider for redesign.
