In June of 2017, Red Bank Catholic and St. James launched a major initiative to “go green” to help protect the environment, to help sustain natural resources for current and future generations, and to promote cost savings for the school.  The first stage of the process was to install new roofing on all academic buildings. The roofing made it possible to then install solar panels on the Mercy and Cabrini wings of RBC, along with the Eck Center and St. James Elementary School.  The panels are expected to produce 40% of the total electric needs of both schools, St. James parish and the convent.

Additionally, Red Bank Catholic had the lighting fixtures in all the classrooms in the three RBC wings, the RBC Fine and Performing Arts Building and in the Eck Center retrofitted with new LED lighting.  This lighting will provide additional energy savings should result in savings of over 20 percent.

According to RBC Principal Mr. Robert Abatemarco, the person primarily responsible for leading the effort to get the job done was St. James Finance Council member Don Faistl.  He said, “Don was also responsible for helping bring the Eck Center in ahead of schedule and under budget.  I knew that Don would be the prime mover as we initiated this project.”  Mr. Faistl, and the other members of the solar project team, Heads of Maintenance Fred Valentino and Fred Valentino Jr., and a core team of representatives from the roofing and solar companies held regular meetings to complete the project this fall.
