What to Do Now That Quarter One is Over?
The end of quarter one marks the midway point of the first semester. Your grades are tallied and posted for you and your parents to view, and teachers are ready to move on to new topics. So? What now? The end of the quarter is a moment that you should seize. This is a great time for you to reflect on the work you did over last nine weeks, reflect on the grade you received for the quarter, and imagine the grade you want for next quarter. Then, write down two goals - two promises to make to yourself - that you will work at to achieve that grade. What were your habits like the last quarter? What habits took you away from getting the grade you wanted? What habits worked in your favor? Did you notice doing something different when you got a particularly good grade on a test or project?
It's time to reflect on habits that aren't working out for you and ask yourself how you can change them. Now, this is a difficult task, because old habits die hard, and new habits are also hard to form. So, don't give up! It takes practice and repetition, and will feel awkward at first, but if you keep at it, you will develop a new habit. Hopefully a new habit that will better serve you and get you closer to that grade you really desire for next quarter. Remember that a midterm most likely awaits you at the end of the second quarter, so start as soon as you can. It is never too early to start studying for it, so if you felt shaky on the information from semester one, this is a great time to slowly review that information so you don't feel overwhelmed in January.
Best of luck in Quarter Two! If you need some help with studying, remember that there are teachers in Room 7 during all lunch periods, there is a science teacher and a math teacher in the cafeteria every morning, and NHS has tutors on the ready to help out whenever they can. Also, don't be afraid to ask your teacher for help. All teachers have at least two "office hours" available to you each week. If you are in a sport or an after-school program, they all will make allowances for you to be a little late to practice so you can get the help you need.
