Jim Daly ('75) to be Inducted into RBC Athletic Hall of Fame
Posted 03/26/2018 12:06PM

Jim Daly was a ten-time letterman and three-year team captain in cross country and track for Red Bank Catholic. As a freshman, he set the standard for excellence by leading the Caseys to a cross country State Championship, was named to the All State Freshman Team, and went on to win the State Parochial Championship in the mile that spring. And he was just getting started.

By the end of his senior year, Jim earned All Shore and All County honors two times. During his senior year he set four course records in cross country, one of them at CBA. He won the State Catholic Conference indoor mile while setting a school record of 4:20. That spring he went undefeated in dual meet competition in the mile and won the Monmouth County Meet of Champions and Shore Meet of Champions. The Asbury Park Press declared him the most decorated runner in RBC’s track and cross-country annals.

The letters and medals are not the whole story. To his teammates, Jim Daly brought excitement to the sport and in the words of one of his fellow Caseys, “through his work ethic, example, and electrifying performances, he showed others it was cool to run.” He adds, “at a time when tracks were made of cinder and running shoes were made like slippers, Jim ran blazing times that stood the test of technology and time. With his trademark blistering kick, he would frustrate opponents and energize teammates time after time.” Jim was recognized as a workhorse and fierce competitor. Coach Rafter would ask him to compete in multiple individual and relay events, and he would often finish a meet with more individual points than opposing team total scores. He was known for his consistency. He never missed a practice, never missed a meet, and never had a bad race. It is impressive to hear how his teammates respect him to this day: “without exception, Jim Daly represented RBC and his team with honor and pride.”

Jim married his RBC sweetheart Donna Young (77’) and they reside in Wilmington, NC with their two daughters Megan and Kara.
