Honors Anatomy Class Teams Up with Athletic Training Students
Posted 12/11/2014 11:05AM

Red Bank Catholic instructor Mrs. Mary Jane Davis and her Honors Anatomy and Physiology class recently paid a visit to the weight room in RBC’s Eck Student Center.  There they teamed up with the students in Mrs. Kristine Ortiz’s Athletic Training class for some practical application of what they had just learned about the human musculoskeletal system.

After selecting a random card with a specific muscle, each anatomy student worked with a partner in the athletic training class to select weight training equipment and an appropriate exercise to work that muscle.  Then, each of the 19 groups demonstrated the exercise to the class. The anatomy student explained the location and action of the muscle while the athletic training student performed the exercise.

Anatomy student Katharine Russo enjoyed the collaboration and said, "I thought it was a great learning experience. Being able to take what we learned about the origin and insertion of the muscles and combine it with what the athletic training class knew was very beneficial. We took what we knew and the other class helped us put it into a useful exercise experience."   Classmate Lindsay Benitez agreed, and added, “Collaborating with the other class gave me insight as to how human physiology can be intertwined with things we do every day. It's interesting to see how two seemingly unrelated classes can come together to discuss one relatable topic."
