Sisters of Mercy Honored for 125 Years of Service
Posted 09/23/2013 10:00AM

On Sunday, September 22nd, the St. James Elementary and Red Bank Catholic High School community gratefully honored the Sisters of Mercy for 125 years of service to their schools with a very special Mass in St. James Church, celebrated by the Most Rev. David M. O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton.  Over 50 Sisters were honored at the Mass and the reception which followed, where they reminisced with current and former students, parents and teachers.  Also in attendance were 10 priests from the area, some of whom had served with the Sisters or had been taught by them when they were students at Red Bank Catholic. In September of 1888, the first Sisters of Mercy arrived in Red Bank to administer to a small, growing Catholic school in the community. That school became St. James Elementary and Red Bank Catholic High Schools, where over 140 Sisters of Mercy have served steadfastly ever since.   The Sisters  greatly enjoyed and were very touched by the day’s celebrations.  Current RBC teacher Sr. Joanmarie McDonnell wanted to give everyone involved in the day’s planning “our prayerful thank you and our loving gratitude.”
