English Teachers Share Summer Literary Ventures

Summer is often time for rest and relaxation, but for English teachers Beth Boylan and Adrienne Genthe, summer provided a chance to work with RBC students on exhilarating literary ventures.

English teacher Ms. Beth Boylan spent an eye-opening, exciting three weeks traveling through Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee, a part of the country she had not yet explored.  When not on the road, in a kayak, or a bookstore, however, Ms. Boylan says she adventured through the novel Shoes with Wings, written by senior Amanda Lennert.   The novel, which popped into Amanda’s head one day while she was in the 8th grade, is a thrilling mix of mythology (Hermes, in particular), romance, and adventure.  Over the summer, Amanda also spent time with her book, and as she said, “getting to know the characters better, even though they have now been in my head for years.”  As part of RBC’s Capstone initiative, Ms. Boylan and Amanda will work closely together this year to polish and prepare the book for literary contests and for possible publication.

English teacher Mrs. Adrienne Genthe also had the opportunity to share a literary experience with one of her students. At the end of her junior year, Ellie Moonan (RBC '15) asked Mrs. Genthe to help her revise her application to Shakespeare’s Globe’s Summer School program, a two-week acting intensive. Ellie was one of 11 applicants  worldwide to be accepted into the program and her parents asked Mrs. Genthe to chaperone the second of the two weeks. Ellie was involved in the workshop for most of the time so Mrs. Genthe had the opportunity to explore much of London.  Some places she visited include Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, the Tower of London, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the Warner Brothers Studio Tour of the Making of Harry Potter, the Tate Modern, and of course, The Globe. Mrs. Genthe was privileged to attend two professional performances, Measure for Measure and Richard II, and also one of Ellie’s performances at the legendary theater. Ellie and Mrs. Genthe were also fortunate to take a day to visit Paris and see the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre Dame.  Mrs. Genthe says, “It was the experience of a lifetime for both of us and I get to take so much of what I learned, saw, and photographed into my classroom!”
