Maureen Hopkins Sutphen (‘78) began her Red Bank Catholic gymnastics career as a member of the Casey team that won four consecutive State Championships. She returned to her alma mater in 2001 as head coach and led the Caseys to back-to-back Overall State Championships in her first two years. Under Maureen’s 11 seasons coaching, RBC Gymnastics had an impressive 118-10 record and a total of seven Central 1 Sectional State Titles and six Shore Conference Championships, was named Overall State Team of the Year in 2001 and 2002 and Central 1 Sectional Team of the Year eight times. During Maureen’s tenure the Caseys were also ranked in the top 20 teams in the state 11 times and made 10 visits to the overall state championship meet.
The Star Ledger named Maureen Overall State Coach of the Year in 2004, and Central 1 Sectional Coach of the Year in 2001, 2006, and 2011. In 2013 Maureen was inducted into the New Jersey State Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Maureen, or “Moe,” had a special bond with her gymnasts. Like a second mother to them, she inspired them daily with quotes before each practice or meet. She challenged them to be best they could be not just as gymnasts, but as students and young women as well. Many of her gymnasts went on to compete at the collegiate level and Moe made a point to keep in contact with them and support them with encouragement and love. She had a positive impact on not only the gymnasts, but on the entire gymnastics community including judges, fellow coaches and fans.
Maureen’s passion and spirit is still very much alive in the world of New Jersey high school gymnastics. Two separate scholarships are awarded in her memory each year to graduating New Jersey gymnasts and the annual shore invitational meet is now known as the Maureen Sutphen Memorial Invitational. One of her favorite quotes which she shared with her team describes how she lived her own life every day. “What if everything you have tried to do in life you have done your absolute best?”
Maureen will be inducted into the 2017 Class of the RBC Athletic Hall of Fame on June 17th. Click HERE for tickets and complete event information.
